TC Bike Life is a story series featuring ordinary people doing ordinary things on their bicycles in Traverse City.
As we gear up for our 3rd annual Traverse City Winter Bike To Work and School Day on February 12th, we’re highlighting many of our winter embracing Bike Champions.
We’ve known Patrick a long time. He’s volunteered with us to make the TCFF bike-tastic and pedaled with us on many TC Rides, our summertime slow roll. We see Patrick’s bike outside Munson Medical Center where he works no matter the weather. We asked Patrick to share his winter biking experience in Traverse City. Here’s his story:
My name is Patrick and it’s been 5 hrs since my last bike commute. At the rate it’s currently snowing, I probably should’ve skied. I’m a nurse at Munson in the Operating Room. I live close enough to town that I’m able to do 90% of my life activities via bicycle- which was an intentional decision. I love to ride, in part, because I hate to drive. I love the self-reliance, freedom, and fresh air! Advice: get bar mitts – they’re warm, you don’t have to worry about losing them, and they’re quicker to “put on.” Get a crappy bike – salt is hard on bikes and there’s no point in ruining a nice bike – and you shouldn’t be worried about speed when winter commuting.
TC Bike Life aims to create awareness for the growing presence of people on bicycles in Traverse City, one story at a time.
