Norte!, a 501c.3 advocacy non-profit, founded in 2014, is dedicated to building a stronger, better connected and more bicycle friendly community by empowering the young and young at heart through bicycles. Norte! educates and advocates for happy, healthy people of all ages and abilities. Our initiatives are many:

  • Traverse City-wide Safe Routes to School project
  • Pro bike/Pro walk Traverse City advocacy
  • Youth mountain bike team and racing programming


Program Director

Posting date: March 1, 2017
Position Identification: Program Director; full-time; FLSA non-exempt


The Program Director supports a range of programming and communication activities to help further Norte!’s mission. S/he is responsible for organizing and implementing Norte!’s youth programming. S/he will also assist with program communications, including the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic communications and delivering presentations to community groups. This position requires a genuine enthusiasm for Norte!’s work and a passion to see youth grow and succeed. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential to effectively interact with and build trust and confidence among our members and supporters.


Reports to: Executive Director
Supervises: none

Works with: Bookkeeper, Outreach Coordinator, Board of Directors. As well as external stakeholders, such as partners, donors, volunteers, and the general public


Program coordination, development and implementation:

  • Safe Routes To School, active transportation programming and special events
  • The Bike Mas Project, both as an after school program and summer camp
  • Mountain bike team and racing program
  • Estrellas, learn to ride program for preschoolers
  • El Barrio Bike Fix, learn to wrench at the Clubhouse
  • El Liderato, youth leadership council
  • Clubhouse management, Traverse City’s community bike shop
  • Implement data collection system and program evaluation plan
  • Develop a risk management and safety plan for programs
  • Coordinate volunteers for all programs as needed


  • Collaborate with other staff to develop, lead, and evaluate communication strategies that will broaden programmatic reach and deepen the organization’s impact
  • Coordinate communications and schedule of programs with schools, parents, and community partners
  • Partner with and coordinate staff in the development and dissemination of effective communication, outreach, and marketing plans and materials
  • Under the guidance of the Executive Director, play an active role in meeting program goals identified in the organization’s strategic plan
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic communications, including newsletter, website, social media, and press releases
  • Coordinate website maintenance to ensure new and consistent information is posted and updated regularly


  • Work collaboratively with staff to identify, cultivate, and solicit individual, foundation, private, corporate, and other funding prospects
  • Routinely network with targeted individuals to cultivate personal relationships and develop personal giving
  • Identify, steward, and assist in soliciting corporate sponsors for programs and events
  • Assist staff with researching funding opportunities and writing grant proposals if requested

Community Engagement:

  • Foster lasting relationships with volunteers as part of recruitment, clearance, training and appreciation
  • Build strategic relationships within the community, including participation in local networking groups
  • Schedule and deliver outreach presentations in the community
  • Maintain relationships with collaborative partners and cultivate new ones


Success is measured by the degree to which:

  • Required work is completed on time and budget goals are met
  • Written communication is clear, concise, professional, and free from error
  • Program plans are adhered to and improved when appropriate
  • Program outcomes are measured and target goals are achieved


At least five years of relevant experience in education, public relations, non-profit sector, bike industry

Formal Education or Equivalent:

Bachelor’s degree with excellent academic performance, preferably in education, public relations, non-profit management, or related field


  • Exhibit a passion for bicycles and professionalism, with superior social and interpersonal skills
  • Exhibit ability to work well, engage, encourage and communicate with youth
  • Extremely detail-oriented with strong organization skills
  • Demonstrate basic bike repair/maintenance skills
  • Exhibit excellent time management skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language
  • Effective problem solving skills
  • Proficient in use of Google Drive, Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, and Salesforce
  • Strong experience utilizing social media, specifically Facebook, Instagram and Twitter


  • Able to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Desire to learn and grow professionally


The Program Director is a full-time FLSA non-exempt position with a salary range of $35,000 – $40,000 plus benefits commensurate with experience
